ROCK MAT

Rose Family

Petrophytum caespitosum

Rock Mat

Rock Mat is called a subshrub because it is very low, only 8 inches tall at maximum. Mats can be more than 3 feet wide but are often less than one inch tall and can be mistaken for a moss. Rock Mat is quite common right at the edge of the South Rim.

Rock Mat Flowers

Rock Mat blooms from summer into early fall. Flowers are fluffy: pink to white on a one-inch, dense raceme.
